Coffee Anyone?
Adding Value to the Coffee-Making Process
Moisture measurement and control are critical at almost every stage of coffee processing in order to ensure optimal product quality. It's also common practice for roastmasters to measure the color of roasted coffee as a measure of the quality of the roasting process. The color value, often referred to as degree of roast (DOR), is normally measured in the ground state as the beans are generally not uniform in color. Our work with coffee producers around the world has resulted in a stable robust moisture calibration for all coffee types including coffee beans, ground coffee and instant coffee.
Benefits from non-contact coffee moisture measurement and control include:
- Improved quality
- Improved productivity
- Energy savings
- Confidence in meeting legislative standards
On-Line at At-Line Measurements are Key
Where the process lends itself, Nordson's Series 9 on-line food gauge can make real-time measurements of moisture and degree of roast. This gauging capability offers better insight into the process and next-level quality control. For grab sample measurements, Nordson's InfraLab Top Loader analyzer can be used to measure moisture and degree of roast also, with a sample measurement time of just 10 seconds, making life easy for your operators and reducing batch release times.
Our solutions can measure moisture and degree of roast in the following coffee products:
- Green coffee beans
- Roast coffee beans
- Ground coffee
- Instant coffee
Coffee roasting is as much an art as a science and our coffee process measurement solutions can be utilized to suit the approach of a wide variety of coffee processes to enable real-time or rapid control and optimization at various stages of production.
The Future Looks Sweet for Coffee Processors
With the availability of the Series 9 on-line gauge and InfraLab Top Loader at-line analyzer, coffee processors have high-precision measurement solutions for their production needs. The advantages of NIR measurement have been proven on all types of applications including moisture, degree of roast, degree of bake and fat/oil, to name a few. This advanced and efficient technology eliminates the measurement errors, waste and cost associated with traditional measurement and laboratory methods. The degree of roast measurement gives coffee processors the competitive edge, enabling them to control product quality while realizing significant productivity savings.
