Specialty Lubrication Supplier Chooses Industry-Leading Consumables Provider
Triboscience Selects Nordson EFD Cartridges, Syringe Barrels, and Dispense Tips for Optimal Results
Based in a modest establishment in Fall River, Massachusetts, Triboscience and Engineering (TS&E) holds a distinct place in the niche lubricant industry. Fall River is a medium-sized city situated in an area that was previously the worldwide hub for whaling, and later on, the epicenter of the industrial revolution in the United States. During the 19th century, whale oil was employed to illuminate factories and oil the machinery that operated America's mills and workshops. Presently, contemporary chemical formulations supply the specialty lubricants that maintain the constant movement of our modern world.
Fortune 500 companies seek Triboscience’s skills when they face a lubrication challenge that they cannot solve. Their high-value formulas are necessary to meet the demands of medical device, aerospace, automotive, military and electronics applications.
Very early in the Triboscience organization’s history the company formed a relationship with Nordson EFD as their cartridge, syringe barrel, and dispense tip partner. This partnership is still in place just over two decades later.
About Triboscience & Engineering
Triboscience & Engineering is a 23-year-old company, providing expertise and support to organizations developing and manufacturing specialty lubricants since 2000. More than two decades later, TS&E has helped hundreds of companies improve their specialty lubricant formulations, product lines, production processes, and operations through the Tribosyn® brand of proprietary lubricants and specialty products.
TS&E provides this support via a range of services and capabilities. The company offers engineering analysis for demanding bearing, gear, chain, and sliding surface applications. New product design and development ranging from lab size to production size batches, plus research and design and pilot production are core competencies, too.
TS&E expertise extends to manufacturing feasibility, design of experiment (DOE), and cost benefit analysis. Lastly, Triboscience provides toll blending, private labeling, and other partnership options so that clients can contract out their lubricant development and production functions.
A key to the company’s success is the diversity of the industries that TS&E serves. Triboscience serves these markets:
- Automotive
- Aviation & Aerospace
- Bearing Manufacturers & Test Companies
- Building Systems & Construction
- Electronics & Semiconductors
- Food & Beverage Lubrication
- General Industry
- Medical & Pharmaceutical
- Military – Government – Municipalities
- Oil & Gas
- Office & Plant Automation
- Plastics, Chemicals & Film Stretching
- Power Transmission & Conveyors / Motion Control
While providing business support and custom formulations for clients, TS&E also markets their own private label brand called Tribosyn®. This off the shelf product line provides a solution for bearing, chain and gear lubricants; in addition, the lubricant is effective for sliding surfaces, anti-seize needs, and extreme heat applications.
Best-in-Class Fluid Packaging
In short, Triboscience solves lubrication challenges that nobody else can — in effect, the company acts as a sort of “lubrication whisperer.” Thus, the chemistries the company develops are very valuable, as they solve the lubrication challenges their clients cannot.
TS&E’s customers purchase their skill set with lubricants, but they also need top quality packaging and containers for these products. In many ways the cartridges, valves, and dispensing tips for the lubrication solutions are as important as the chemistries contained within them.
That’s because TS&E’s customers must dispense these fluids into their products under exacting conditions. Oftentimes, their customers will have an existing production line in place for fluid dispensing and specify their cartridge and syringe barrel preferences so that they can operate as efficiently as possible.
Triboscience requires these properties from the syringe barrels and cartridges that they use:
- Superior strength
- Clarity
- Chemical compatibility
- Precision
- Cleanliness
- Anti-static packaging
- Strict quality control
- Rapid filling without trapped air
To meet this demanding specification list, TS&E has tested a wide range of cartridges, syringe barrels, valves, and dispense tips. After all their tests and research, the only provider that meets all these needs, and meet their delivery needs is Nordson EFD headquartered in East Providence, RI.
That’s been the case since the company first started packaging lubricants and specialty fluids for their clients. Many of TS&E’s clients use Nordson EFD fluid dispensing systems in their manufacturing processes, and the certainty of using the company’s barrels, cartridges, pistons, tip caps and end caps is a production requirement.
Like any responsible manufacturer, TS&E investigates consumable options from time to time. Nordson EFD shows its value each time they conduct this test — competing products cannot hold up to the strict quality and purity needs that TS&E requires.
“Nordson EFD’s cartridges, valves, and tips are made so well that they offer the tight tolerances we need to be certain that we don’t experience any fluid leakage past the follower. Nobody meet’s Nordson EFD’s quality,” says Paul Bessette, President, Triboscience and Engineering.
In addition to the above requirements, Triboscience uses Nordson EFD products because they are very clean — no dust or dirt inside the cartridges — and offer exceptional barrel clarity with no air bubbles in them. “Our clients have very high expectations for our lubricants. Nordson EFD barrels and syringes add value to our formulations by reflecting our commitment to quality in the components we use,” says Brian Comeau PhD., Technical Director, Triboscience and Engineering.
Forward-Thinking Relationship
The business relationship between Nordson EFD and TS&E spans two decades. While their close geographic distance makes for an easy partnership, it is the shared values of continuous improvement and customer success that keeps the relationship strong. “TS&E’s products and services are best-in-class in our markets, so it was natural that we would choose the market leader Nordson EFD for our consumables partner,” says Gene Daniell, Commercial Director, Triboscience and Engineering.
As automated, Smart Factory manufacturing grows, both TS&E and Nordson EFD are poised to play a major role in the evolving 4th industrial revolution. No matter the current paradigm is, however, the shared commitment to quality is what makes both Nordson EFD and TS&E a successful partnership. And, as manufacturing innovations evolve, both East Providence, RI and Fall River, MA will play big role in the global manufacturing chain.
