Nano-Coating - An Emerging Application for Protecting Circuitry
The Nordson ASYMTEK applications team has seen increased interest in nano-coating materials as alternatives to traditional conformal coatings for protecting circuitry, particularly for mobile electronics. Nano particles are usually defined as having a length between 1-100 nanometers, or 1 one-billionth of a meter.

What makes nano-coatings so attractive are their physical properties. First, they are highly hydrophobic and oleophobic (meaning they repel water and oils), even when applied in extremely thin layers. Second, they are generally more benign than solvent-based coatings for personal safety and environmental concerns. Third, most applications do not require masking. And fourth, due to their quick-drying nature, curing ovens are generally unnecessary.
Most nano-coatings have very low viscosity and solids content so an atomized spray applicator is typically recommended. The Nordson ASYMTEK applications lab has already demonstrated excellent results using a Select Coat® SL-940 system equipped with a DJ-2200 jet and SC-300 applicator. However, other types of dispensing technologies may be appropriate depending on the application and expectations.
