How Kamstrup Streamlined THT Soldering Operations with Nordson’s SELECT Synchro

At its headquarters in Skanderborg, Denmark, the company recently completed a major production upgrade—transitioning from wave soldering to selective soldering—with remarkable results.

The Challenge: Limited Space, High Expectations

Kamstrup’s through-hole technology (THT) production line was originally supported by traditional wave soldering equipment. When the team began exploring selective soldering to improve automation and process control, they initially considered a conventional nine-meter-long system (29.5 feet) with six solder pots. However, the proposed solution would have exceeded the available floor space.

That’s when Kamstrup discovered Nordson’s SELECT Synchro selective soldering system.

The Solution: Compact Power, Proven Performance

With a footprint of just 2.5 meters (8.2 feet), the SELECT Synchro offered Kamstrup the perfect balance of performance and compact design. The upgrade not only fit seamlessly into the existing floor plan but also freed up six meters (19.7 feet) of valuable factory space—allowing Kamstrup to optimize its production environment.

The results went far beyond space savings. By implementing the Synchro system, Kamstrup achieved a 20% increase in production throughput.

“After two years of extensive planning and testing, we are happy to complete this project with such good results,” said Kasper Neubert, Production Engineer at Kamstrup. “If the Synchro system had not been available, we would have had to redesign our entire THT production line to incorporate selective soldering. Instead, we saved six meters in total line length, advanced our automation, and gained a 20% jump in output.”

Proving the Process Before Purchase

To validate Kamstrup’s decision, the Nordson team arranged a full production demo run at its Valkenswaard, Netherlands, facility near Eindhoven. Hundreds of Kamstrup’s PCBs from their main product line were processed on the Synchro system, allowing Kamstrup engineers to evaluate output quality and process metrics before committing to purchase.

“That helpful information confirmed our decision to invest in the SELECT Synchro with zero risk of not achieving our production targets,” Kasper added.
