Benefits of Hot Melt Adhesive Dispensing Applications
In an era where industrial manufacturing is accelerating toward efficiency, environmental sustainability, and intelligence, Hot Melt Adhesives (HMA) and related dispensing technologies are emerging as pivotal forces driving industrial innovation. Nordson, a global leader in precision dispensing technology, is committed to empowering enterprises to overcome production bottlenecks through innovative equipment and solutions. By integrating automatic engineering with deep expertise in hot melt adhesive dispensing technology, Nordson enables manufacturers to achieve unprecedented precision, speed, and eco-consciousness in their operations, redefining the future of the product assembly process.
Hot Melt Adhesives: Redefining Bonding Efficiency
Hot melt adhesives (HMAs) are 100% solid-content thermoplastic polymer materials that achieve liquid dispensing through heating and melting, forming high-strength bonds within seconds upon cooling.
| Property | Hot Melt Adhesives | Solvent-Based Adhesives |
| Curing Time | 0.5–5 seconds | 5–60 minutes |
| VOC Emissions | Near-zero (EPA-exempt) | High (toluene/ethyl acetate) |
| Safety | Non-toxic, no fire risk | Flammable, requires ventilation |
| Production Efficiency | No drying stage needed | Energy-intensive drying |
Types of Hot Melt Adhesive
Hot melt adhesives are materials composed of thermoplastic resins or elastomers, which are solid or semi-solid at room temperature. They are liquefied through heating for application and subsequently solidify upon cooling to create a bond.
Non-Reactive Hot Melt Adhesive:
Adhesive that is solvent-free (ensuring safety), requires no drying time, provides rapid bonding, and is compatible with various substrates. It cures through cooling after application. The primary types include: EVA resin-based, synthetic rubber-based, polyamide-based, and polyester-based.
Reactive Hot Melt Adhesive:
Free of solvents, requires no drying, and offers rapid bonding (similar to non-reactive options); enhanced heat resistance and durability; allows progression to the subsequent step prior to complete curing. Curing initiates through cooling, followed by hardening through a reaction with moisture in the air.
Main categories include: PUR (polyurethane), POR (polyolefin).
Environmental Regulations & Adhesives
- Eco Benefits: Hot melts are free from VOCs, helping to meet stringent emission standards. They are safer compared to solvent-based alternatives, which lessens the need for extensive ventilation.
- Health and Safety: While there are no harmful fumes, the high temperatures (ranging from 121°C to 204°C) necessitate the use of heat-resistant protective equipment/clothing.
- Sustainability: New bio-based formulations (from renewable materials) and biodegradable/recyclable options are emerging.
- Regulatory Adherence: Worldwide regulations, such as REACH, promote the use of safer adhesives; manufacturers strive to find a balance between compliance, effectiveness, and affordability.
Why Choose Hot Melt adhesive dispensing application?
- Precision Application: accurate dispensing via automated systems
- Cost Efficiency: less energy, adhesive reduction
- Sustainability: Zero solvent waste
