The Powder Coating Institute (PCI) recently awarded its 2019 scholarships to worthy students who are studying various subjects that can lead to a career in powder coating, including the PCI/Nordson Ken Kreeger Scholarship.

This year’s PCI/Nordson Ken Kreeger Scholarship recipient is Daikon Iverson, a student at the University of Wisconsin – Stout. This is the first year Nordson’s named scholarship has carried Kreeger’s name. A hugely influential figure in the powder coating industry, Ken Kreeger was a tenacious Nordson sales leader, shaping both the wider industry and the Powder business at Nordson for almost four decades before his retirement in 2010. In 2010 Kreeger was inducted to the Powder Coating Institute Hall Of Fame. The named scholarship recognizes Kreeger’s contributions to the industry.

Funding for the scholarship comes from the Nordson BUILDS program, which supports students who live near our facilities in the United States and attend a trade school, community college or university for a major related to manufacturing. In addition to PCI’s scholarship application requirements, recipients of the award must live near a Nordson manufacturing facility and show an interest in powder coating. Nordson’s Greg Dawson, Senior Sales Manager, partners with Sue Ivancic, Inside Sales Representative at Nordson and member of the PCI board, to select recipients of the PCI/Nordson Ken Kreeger Scholarship. Dawson was a close friend and colleague of Ken Kreeger, and it was his idea initially to rename the scholarship.

"I think there was no question that it needed to be named after him," Dawson said. "No question, after all he did. What better way to honor him than to name the scholarship after him?" Scholarship committee chair Peter Dority received several letters of appreciation, noting, “The scholarship recipients were extremely grateful and stated that receiving the award was an incredible honor and very motivating.”

PCI administers the scholarship program, which promotes and solicits scholarship applications from students through numerous educational institutions and the industry at large. The scholarship program continues to grow and attract bright new talent to the powder coating industry, which includes students pursuing degrees in polymer science, manufacturing, engineering, business management and marketing. The criteria for the awards include specific studies and projects relevant to powder coating technology, transcript/GPA, future goals, unique qualifications, and a letter of recommendation from their adviser.

The growth of the scholarship program enhances the potential of young scholars in the industry and both Nordson Corporation and PCI are proud to be a part of it.
