Liquid Coating for Kitchen Cabinets

For more than 20 years, homeowners and businesses have relied on Legacy Cabinets (Eastaboga, AL USA) for their cabinetry needs.

The company provides bathroom and kitchen cabinets, as well as accessories, in a variety of wood types, paints and stains. Because the process of hand-mixing liquid components is a timely and expensive process, the company was in search of a more efficient method of mixing and applying their coatings.

“When you’re mixing by hand, if the material isn’t mixed to the correct ratio and used within the correct time frame, it won’t apply correctly,” explains Pat Traylor, vice president of manufacturing for Legacy Cabinets.

“This means a significant amount of wasted materials that becomes very costly.” Traylor oversees production in the 515,000 square-foot facility in Eastaboga, AL. With more than 600 employees producing 17,000 to 18,000 cabinets each week, the company generated around $100 million in sales last year alone. In search of a more efficient way to mix the liquid coatings, Traylor contacted Nordson Corporation – one of the industry’s top suppliers of liquid plural component dispensing systems. 

Traylor acquired an Optimix system for each of the facility’s two paint rooms. The units allow for the rapid change of up to 10 different recipe menus for base and catalyst materials, and processes paints in a wide range of viscosities and flow rates.

The Legacy Cabinets system also uses Nordson 64B and 25B pumps for the paints, sealer and topcoat supplying the Optimix 1 system. “The pumps are heavy duty and easy to work with,” says Traylor. Compared to previous systems, “the Nordson system is the obvious choice. The Optimix is easy to program and operate,” adds Traylor.

“It’s simply an effective, well thought-out product. You pull the trigger, and bam – there you go.” Because the Optimix system mixes components upon application, there is significantly less material waste. 

“We have installed nine Nordson Optimix 1 plural component systems, and they are by far the most user-friendly units we have worked with,” says Chris Cook, owner of CCO Finishing Systems, a Nordson distributor.

“They are easy to install and a breeze to program.” The Nordson Optimix 1 plural component liquid dispensing system is currently used in a wide variety of industries, including agriculture and heavy equipment, furniture, transportation and general finishing applications.
