Foam-in-Place (FIP) Application


As the automotive market increasingly focuses on the e-mobility sector, it is not only the supply chain issues that need to be taken into account, but also the fact that suppliers and equipment manufacturers are focusing on this new sector and further challenges need to be overcome. 

Using the example of 2-component FIP (Foam-In-Place) applications with Pro-Meter, Nordson has shown how important it is not only to master flow rates and robot adaptation, but also to deliver the overall bead application pattern, including start and stop controls, in a customer-oriented manner through software optimization.

Square Battery Cells


Beading: Beads are placed on each square battery cell. Once placed in the battery pack, the beads are compressed and create a larger bonding surface. Uses less material, but requires more robotic control.

Encapsulation: Cells are placed into a battery pack, and then material is dispensed or injected to completely surround the cells with the sealant material. Uses a large volume of material, but provides the highest confidence of insulation, with limited robotic requirements.

Air entrapment: air can become trapped around the battery cells curing an encapsulation fill or pour.

Nordson Solution: Programmable dispense speeds allow for mid-shot adjustments in material flow rate, which allows air to escape from the fill.

Speed can be adjusted back to full speed once the material is past the point of concern, which allows production speed to be achieved.

Cylindrical Battery Cells


Production Speed: when dispensing beads or dots in small spaces, such as a battery cell housing, a needle or nozzle is used that requires very accurate robot movement, that can lead to lengthening of cycle time.

Nordson Solution: Multiple dispense heads per dispensing meter can allow for more cells to be complete before the need to move the robot dispensing arm location

Location Accuracy: moving quickly from place to place can result in beads or dots slightly off from the desired location, or beads left incomplete.

Nordson Solution: our material and application knowledge, coupled with our robotic automation experience, enable us to design engineered solutions that provide the correct number of dispense heads at the flow rate and robotic speed the application needs.

Bonding of Current Circuit to Battery Module


Long Beads: the length of the bead may exceed the volume of the meter, requiring the meter to reload, resulting of a gap, or overlap, in the bead.

Nordson Solution: Sizing the meter to the optimal size to ensure reloads are not necessary before the end of the bead.

Possible continuous flow meters can be used.

Intricate bead paths: can result in sharp turns where the robot slows down, and the meter deposits too much material.

Nordson Solution: Nordson’s Auto Flow Mode on Servo driven meters allows for the flow rate to be adjusted at the same rate as the robot does, this results in even material placement along the battery cell or module.

Current Circuit Thermal Interface Material


Straight lines: beads are applied in simple patterns, allowing for fast application. Spread out of TIM may not be in best location

Swirl, or Circle patterns: beads are applied in intricate patterns, which slows speed of application, but results in better heat transfer.

Long Beads: the length of the bead may exceed the volume of the meter, requiring the meter to reload, resulting of a gap, or overlap, in the bead.

Nordson Solution: Sizing the meter to the optimal size to ensure reloads are not necessary before the end of the bead.

Battery Pack Bonding


Bead bonding: Beads of material are precisely applied to the face of each module, arranged side by side, and then compressed. Uses less material, but requires robotic application.

Flood: Material is dispensed to the base of the entire pack, to bond each module in place. Simplifies robotic needs, but utilizes a greater volume of material. Volume of bead or flood requires a large meter, that can be difficult to mount to a robot.

Nordson Solution: Our range of continuous flow meters are utilized, mounted directly to most robots. Larger shot meters can also be installed at the base of the robot, where the dispense valve is placed directly on the robot arm.

Battery Module Sealing


Methods: Bead completely surrounding the battery module and Bead placed between a top and bottom cell moduleBead be accurately dispensed in the correct location, to ensure assembly compression does not overflow into battery cells, or outside of pack.

Nordson Solution: Specially designed nozzles or needles for precision application in difficult to access channels / locations.

Wide Ratio Materials


Challenge: Meter, mix, dispense equipment is commonly developed for 1:1 materials.

Nordson Solutions: Custom Ratios, Nordson designs cylinders and metering rods that fit the volumetric ratio exactly, as well as providing appropriate sized orifices on fluid inlet and outlet valves.

Specific Meters, our Pro-Meter D2K utilizes two independently controlled servo motors, which allow for the pre-pressuring of each material to its own desired pressure for the best mix.

Valve Selection, our 3-port valves developed for both thick (250 Series) and thin (545 Series) materials, provide two orifices for the high volume side, and a singular orifice for the low volume side, allowing the high volume to flow efficiently.

Dissimilar Viscosities


Challenge 1: Thick and Thin materials flow differently with the same amount of pressure, resulting in one material leading the other, a phenomenon known as “Lead Lag”. This can result in an unmixed section of a bead.

Nordson Solution: Lead Lag Adjustments - hardware options for our Pro-Meter Series allow for lead/lag corrections. Pre-Pressure Capability - The Nordson Pro-Meter D2K utilizes two independently controlled servo motors, which allow for the pre-pressuring of each material to its individual desired pressure for the best mix.

Challenge 2: Thick materials force their way into the thin material’s discharge port, resulting in a cured shut valve.

Nordson Solution: Check Valve at point of dispense; our 3 Port style valves for both thick (250 Series) and thin (545 Series) materials, provide a check valve for the thin material, preventing any material backflow into the valve body.

Abrasive Materials


Challenge 1: Abrasive materials wear away at fluid seals and o-rings, causing premature leaks.

Nordson Solution: Seal Selection Nordson Sealant Equipment offers over a dozen seal and o-ring compounds to be compatible with the material, some compounds are chosen specifically for their resistance to abrasion, and ability to rebound when being worn. Seal Cartridges – Quick change seal cartridges are used to quickly change out seals and o-rings without line down situations.

Challenge 2: Abrasive materials wear away at hard components in the fluid path, resulting in pressure changes and leaks, which can disrupt volume and ratio accuracy.

Nordson Solution: Fluid Path Design – Fluid paths in our meters and valves are designed for the most efficient and easiest path of fluid flow. Special Coatings – Nordson's patented “Sure Guard” coating provides abrasion resistance for rods, cylinders, and valve components.

Filled Materials


Challenge 1: Fillers can be heavier than the liquid they are in, and fall out of suspension.

Nordson Solution: Material Agitation - Nordson supplies material pressure tanks that can have material agitators added to keep the material moving and the fillers in suspension. Material Recirculation - circulating the material from the dispense valve back to the supply tanks allows for the fillers contained in the meter and hoses to be kept in suspension.

Challenge 2: Fillers can gather, or pack out, in locations and alter pressures over time.

Nordson Solution: with a flushable design and minimal use of 90 degree turns, Nordson meters and supply equipment allow for less material to pack out in corners and metering cylinders.
