How many different piston types does Nordson EFD offer?

White SmoothFlow™ pistons
These general-purpose pistons are effective for 90% of dispensing applications. They feature a dual-wiper sidewall with a moderate interference fit, enabling them to work well with a wide range of fluids. Channels molded into the cone help move air from beneath the piston to escape via the sidewalls.

Orange Flatwall pistons
These pistons are designed for use with thick, stringy fluids like RTVs. Dispensing applications using high viscosity fluids often suffer from piston bounce, which refers to the buildup of air between the piston and the fluid column that can compromise deposition.

With flat sidewalls and a negative interference fit – a small gap between the piston sidewall and the inner diameter of the syringe barrel – our orange Flatwall pistons prevent air from being trapped beneath the piston.

Beige SmoothFlow pistons
Based on the design of our white SmoothFlow pistons, our beige pistons target more expensive high-viscosity fluids. The dual-wiper sidewall and tighter fit help minimize the amount of residue left in the syringe barrel. At the same time, our beige pistons also control the amount of air that bypasses the piston.

Clear Flex pistons
These flexible pistons deliver a tight fit and are designed to reduce piston bounce. They are ideal for applications that require high-viscosity fluids to be dispensed at high pressures and/or high cycle rates.

Blue LV Barrier pistons
Designed for low-viscosity fluids and cyanoacrylates, our blue LV barrier pistons feature dual-wiper sidewalls with the tightest interference fit to ensure the pistons maintain their positions in the syringe barrel during extreme pressure variations. A tiny hole in the piston allows the system to cycle between pressure and vacuum without any need for the piston to move in the syringe barrel.

Red SmoothFlow pistons
Ideal for manual (mechanical) dispensing, our red SmoothFlow pistons feature a very tight fit between sidewall and syringe barrel inner diameter that we offer. This enables them to operate effectively with the extreme forces involved in manual or mechanical dispensing.
