Nordson Team in China Wins Badminton Championship

Our Nordson team in Shanghai, China recently participated for the first time in a local badminton tournament – and they won the championship! Badminton is a hugely popular sport in China, so competition can be extremely fierce.

Seven Nordson employees represented our company in the tournament, which was organized by Nanjing Bank and held in Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park. Since the employees work in different lines of business, many of them hardly knew each other before they formed a team and began training for the competition.

Ellen Wang, Regional Business HR Partner at Nordson; and Flora Wang, Administration Specialist, helped organize Nordson's participation in the event, including purchasing team uniforms, organizing pre-match training and other logistical support. Ellen had also trained as a back-up player.

"Before the competition, most of us didn't really know each other," Ellen said. "But after we started practicing together, we became friends. The tournament was a bridge among us as colleagues and it makes us a stronger team at work now."

The team's shared passion for badminton brought them together, and they were determined to bring their best efforts to the competition when the time came -- no matter what.

Mani Ahmadi, AT-ES China General Manager, proved his dedication when his return flight from a business trip in Japan was delayed by 12 hours. He came straight from the airport to the tournament without any rest to take his place and compete beside his colleagues.

The first day of the tournament involved a round-robin tournament among 32 teams. The single-elimination events included mixed doubles, men's doubles and men's singles events. Although the Nordson team started out nervous, they quickly found their footing and rose through the ranks of players.

"Despite the tension and pressure at the beginning" Ellen said, "Nordson had great results in the first round and became much braver through encouragement and support among players."

Mani's mixed doubles team won their match that day, which was a crucial success for Nordson on its way to the championship title. Following a successful second day of competition, the last deciding match came down to a men's singles face-off. Then, after an unprecedented ball in front of the net, our Nordson team became the champions!

"It's so exciting," Flora said. "We're so proud of the team for winning the title, especially since it was their first time competing together and representing Nordson."

Along with the championship title, Nordson's team earned 3,000¥ ($453) in prize money that will allow them to reserve badminton venues and continue training together.

While this was the first year they competed together, it won't be the last time our Nordson team in China represents us. Their teamwork, energy and dedication earned them the title of badminton champions, and they'll be proud to defend that title again next year.
