Big Build Makes a Big Impact in Rhode Island

Big Build 1

Children’s Friend, a nonprofit that aims to improve the wellbeing of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children, was this year’s recipient of Nordson’s Big Build grant. Since 2006, the Big Build program—funded through Nordson Corporation—has brought playgrounds and other resources to communities near Nordson facilities and given dozens of employees the opportunity to make a direct impact.

Big Build 2Our employees feel strongly about the philanthropic culture built by our founders,” Joan Szczepanik, community manager for the Nordson Corporation Foundation, said. “Nordson believes in giving back to communities where we are located—not to promote our business, but because it’s the right thing to do.”

Nordson seeks out organizations that will use the grant to benefit the most people possible. With 15 sites throughout Rhode Island, Children’s Friend provides services to the state’s youngest residents, including nurse visits for high-risk newborns, therapeutic child care for children with special needs, and adoption and foster care services. The non-profit also helps other family members work toward self-sufficiency by connecting them with individualized resources.

Nordson has donated $140,000 toward Children’s Friend projects since 2013, including its recent renovation of a historic school building. In addition to remodeling classrooms to house a new childcare facility for preschoolers, Children’s Friend hoped the site’s playground could benefit the entire community.

“The idea of bringing resources to a community that desperately needs them is exciting, but to use our resources efficiently, the playground was the part of the school that wasn’t going to be the most exciting,” Stacy Couto, VP of external affairs for Children’s Friend, said.

A boring playground is something Nordson just couldn’t let slide.

For two days in August, more than 30 Nordson EFD employees poured concrete, constructed playground equipment and organized materials for seven classrooms—a donation of time and talent that helped Children’s Friend finish the building in time for its ribbon-cutting ceremony September 9.

“This run-down facility has been transformed over the last year,” David Caprio, president and CEO of Children’s Friend, said. “It’s going to be a center of excellence, and our kids are going to be in a safe place. We are incredibly thankful for Nordson’s partnership in helping us to help our kids.”

Nordson’s six-year involvement with Children’s Friend, it seems, is far from over.

Big Build 3

“The employees were so excited to use the newly introduced Volunteer Release Time policy,” Joan said. “By the time they were done building, they were already planning to go back and read to the kids.”

Children’s Friend offers a variety of ways to make an impact through other service opportunities, including fundraising events, donation drives for items like diapers and wipes, sponsorship of children for the organization’s holiday toy drive.

“Children are our future, and it’s very important for our company to support organizations that are involved in providing better educational facilities for the children,” Srini Subramanian, VP and general manager of Nordson EFD, said. “The people at EFD who work in this community are a part of this community, too, so it’s extremely important for them to have opportunities where they are able to give back to the community to which they belong.”
