Overall approach

Overview

Our overall approach to corporate responsibility is directed by our President and Chief Executive Officer and supported by our senior leaders. These senior leaders include our Chief Financial Officer, General Counsel, Vice President of Human Resources, Vice President of Global Continuous Improvement, Vice President of Supply Chain and our Vice Presidents of Operations. This team not only understands the importance of responsible practices but also sets the tone across our company for our employees. Our employees know that, together, we share the responsibility for managing our most significant economic, environmental, social and governance topics, as outlined in this report.

Materiality Process

At the end of 2016 and early in 2017, we set out to increase the robustness of our corporate responsibility practices and reporting. We sought to identify our most important economic, environmental, social and governance (ESG) topics. This materiality assessment began with extensive research to identify a universe of possible topics. We then prioritized topics based upon evidence provided by our internal and external stakeholders, including our executive leadership team, investors, customers, industry associations, competitors and suppliers. We supplemented stakeholder interviews with best practice research from sources related to our external stakeholder groups. These steps created a robust data set, which we analyzed through a rigorous scoring process. At the conclusion of the process, our executive leaders reviewed the results and verified the approach.
The materiality matrix below summarizes our findings. Every topic on our materiality matrix is important to our company. Topic placement reflects the significance to our stakeholders (along the ‘y’ axis) and significance to Nordson (along the ‘x’ axis). Topics further from the origin of the axes are considered highest priority and are therefore the focus of this report. These topics are:

Talent Management & Development
Innovation
Customer Relations & Satisfaction
Management Systems & Operational Excellence
Product Quality & Safety
Ethics & Compliance
Workplace Health & Safety
Supply Chain
Community Investment
Environmental Footprint
