As a partner to the Life Sciences industry, Nordson helps improve the quality of life for people around the world. Our biomaterial dispensing components are critical in the operating room, and our precision fluid management components are key to the performance of numerous devices. Our fluid dispensing, surface preparation, test and inspection, and plastic extrusion and injection molding technologies are key to the manufacturing of a wide variety of medical devices, including pacemakers, stents and catheters. We are also critical to a growing range of related applications, including pharmaceutical manufacturing, drug discovery and delivery, diagnostics, medical electronics, and ocular. By providing unmatched technological expertise and a global support system, Nordson continues to help manufacturers in this important industry develop innovative solutions while also improving the accuracy, reliability and cost-efficiency of their operations.

Life Sciences Markets Served by Nordson

Fluid Management Components
Nordson's Value Plastics product line includes quick connect fittings, luer fittings, check valves, tube-to-tube fittings, threaded fittings and blood pressure monitoring components.  These products are generally low dollar cost, high value-add, mission-critical components of the larger systems they enable. Major applications for these products include general insufflation, irrigation and aspiration sets, single-use container systems, anesthesia, cardiovascular surgery, ophthalmic surgery, cataract surgery and blood management.  Our plastic extrusion and injection molding capabilities are used in the manufacturing of blood solution bags, intravenous tubing, and syringes.

Biomaterial Dispensing and Application - Wound Care
Nordson MICROMEDICS FibriJet bioapplicator products are used for applying and dispensing biomaterials such as fibrin tissue sealant and concentrated plasma gel for controlling bleeding, healing wounds and other related medical procedures.   The product line includes single and dual syringe applicators modified with interchangeable tips for the particular needs of specific surgical procedures.  The products enable the controlled dispense of a single material or simultaneous dispense of two materials to a localized treatment site with simple, one-handed operation.  Nordson MICROMEDICS products are marketed to a wide variety of customers including distributors, surgeons, OEMs, hospitals and outpatient clinics.

Medical Devices  Medical Devices
Nordson systems are widely used in the assembly of medical devices.  For years, manufacturers have used our dispensing systems to bond together pacemakers, catheters, blood filters and many other devices associated with dialysis, anesthesia delivery, ventilators, respirators and disposables.  In addition, our automated valves apply precise, minute amounts of cyanoacrylates, UV-cure adhesives and two-part epoxies for needle-hub bonding, syringe assembly and catheter manufacturing. Our plasma treatment systems can aid in bonding dissimilar materials by cleaning, activating and roughening surfaces to optimize the strength and quality of the bond chemically and physically.

The performance of filter media can be dramatically enhanced by the use of plasma during functionalization and deposition processes. Functionalization can enhance the wettability and alter gas and liquid permeation rates. Plasma can be used to deposit materials on filter media to tie layers of anti-coagulant, anti-viral or anti-microbial materials to the media.

PharmaceuticalsPharmaceutical manufacturers are ever-conscious of quality, continuous improvement and cost efficiency.  As a result, finding the right partner to help develop and execute your products is critical.  Nordson brings unmatched engineering expertise and application support to pharmaceutical manufacturers, offering a wide range of options in fluid dispensing, plasma treatment and curing to keep you productive and profitable.  We also provide sterile packaging solutions critical for pharmaceuticals.

Drug Discovery and Delivery
Drug DiscoveryDrug discovery and development companies are at the forefront of a dynamic life sciences industry – driven by continuous research, ever-evolving technologies and increased demand for more and improved health-related products.  It's a fast-paced environment, where processes must be integrated and stringent government regulations met.  Nordson provides reliable fluid dispensing and hot melt dispensing systems, as well as gas plasma surface treatment systems, offering the speed, accuracy and process control and traceablity needed for drug discovery companies to stay ahead of ever-changing technology requirements.  With our plastic extrusions capabilities, we also provide drug delivery via transdermal patches, which deliver medication into the bloodsteam from direct application to the skin.

DiagnosicsThe growth in the use of point-of-care devices as well as advances in laboratory analysis like lab-on-chip technology have demanded precision assembly processes, which Nordson products enable. For the manufacture of point-of-care devices, like diabetic test strips, our systems dispense exact amounts of reagents onto the products.
Lab-on-a-chip (biochip) applications for drug discovery, biotechnology and ecology research require dispensing micro amounts of fluids such as reagents or applying hot wax, hot melt or phase change fluids used in fluid flow control. Microfluidic devices have extremely small channels for the analyte to flow through to the detector or processing element. Critical to the success of the microchannel is its wettability since any trapped bubbles will result in device failure. Plasma treatment is used to improve the wettability of these inherently hydrophobic polymeric channels to ensure that the fluid flows reliably.

Medical Electronics
Medical ElectronicsAs medical devices get smaller and more sophisticated, so do the components that operate them. Our high-speed automated systems with reliability-proven assembly techniques are used by medical electronics manufacturers to accurately apply epoxies to these tiny parts, which are used in devices like hearing aids, defibrillators and pacemakers.

Unique requirements for medical electronics such as higher density, traceability, and RF shielding are met by Nordson's dispensing equipment for underfilling flip chips, conformal coating, dam and fill encapsulation. Plasma is a standard process in the assembly of microelectronics to improve the pull strength and uniformity of wire bonds; increase filet height, filet uniformity, and underfill adhesion for flip chip devices, as well as alter surfaces for better adhesion for encapsulation and molding processes.

OcularContact and intraocular lens production processes involve the dispensing of a variety of fluids and can benefit from plasma treatment. Whether your assembly operation is fully automated or performed by individual operators, Nordson has dispensing systems that are capable of metering these fluids in consistent, repeatable amounts that can bring an increase in yields while reducing production costs, maintenance and downtime. Nordson's plasma treatment systems can enhance and enable processes used in lens production, for example, creating a hydrophilic lens surface that is resistant to protein deposition, which produces a lens having improved comfort and longer wear. Plasma can also remove contamination from process carriers used in the manufacture of contact lenses. In addition, plasma deposition is used to provide coatings for contact or intraocular lenses to improve wettability and enhance adhesion of liquid-based chemistries.
