Nordson and Northview High School Join for Sixth Consecutive Year of Success in FIRST Robotics Competition

Duluth, Georgia, USA

11 Apr 2012

Nordson Adhesive Dispensing Systems division and Northview High School participated in the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition, March 15 – 17, 2012 in Duluth Georgia.

Since 2007, Nordson has partnered with Northview High School of Johns Creek, Georgia, using Nordson facilities, sponsoring teams, training and mentoring students in robot design, building, programming and testing robots for competition.

The 25-student team competed in the 2012 Peachtree Regional event, held at the 50,000 sq ft. Gwinnett, GA Civic Center along with 60 high school teams from Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi and Tennessee.

This year’s event titled, Rebound Rumble, is played by pitting two robot alliances against each other, on a flat, 27 x 54 ft field. Each alliance consists of three teams. They compete to score as many basketballs as possible, into their hoops, during a 2-minute and 15-second match. The higher the hoop in which the basketball is scored, the more points the team receives. The match ends with robots attempting to balance on bridges located at the middle of the competition field.

A large contingent of the Northview Techno Titans team will participate in the FIRST Robotics Championships, held in St. Louis, MO, April 25 - 28, 2012.

"Working with the students from Northview seems to get better every year” said Pete Estelle chief engineer at Nordson. “Each group of students uses the knowledge and experience gained in previous years.

Their ideas and robot designs become more sophisticated each year. It’s a very rewarding working relationship for the students and the mentors who volunteer. The goal is to foster STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) in young people. I think the real winning is sharing that with eager students. It’s hard work, but fun.”

The Northview and Nordson partnership has resulted in consistent competition victories and awards including:

  • 2007 Bayou Regional Champion
  • 2008 Peachtree Regional Finalist
  • 2009 Finished in top 1/3 of Peachtree Region
  • 2010 Peachtree Regional Champion
  • 2010 Peachtree Regional Creativity Award
  • 2011 Peachtree Regional Semifinalist
  •  2011 Peachtree Regional Innovation in Control Award

The FIRST Robotics Competition provides an educational and engineering environment for students to learn technical and business skills that aid in future job placement. Teams, made of students and professional engineers, join to produce a robot that not only can do the task, but can compete to do it better than the robots of other teams. FIRST’s competition combines the competitiveness of real-life challenges with the fun of learning.

FIRST was founded to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. The not-for-profit organization’s mission is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, that inspire innovation, and that foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
