Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq: NDSN) and Corrugated Gear and Services (Alpharetta, GA) announced today a collaborative effort to convert currently installed General Taper lines to hot melt adhesive joining. This is an expansion to the current relationship where Corrugated Gear supplies Nordson hot melt adhesive systems on new lines. Most General Tapers will enjoy increased production efficiency and reduced costs from hot melt conversion. The finished boxes will have better structural integrity and a cleaner appearance.
Corrugated Gear and Nordson have identified the Nordson ProBlue® adhesive melter and H-20 extended nozzle applicator as the ideal adhesive system for box making on General Tapers. With nearly 30 years in corrugated equipment production and service, and as the OEM for General Taper since 1999, Corrugated Gear has the unique advantage of decades of experience installing conversion systems on General Tapers.
Hot melt adhesive offers numerous quality and cost advantages over tape. Tape systems require frequent manually-intensive and time-consuming changes and adjustments, and tape rolls tend to be heavy and difficult for operators to handle. Whereas, hot melt adhesive can be easily added to the melter tank in manageable quantities as needed, or replenished by automatic fill systems. Adhesive storage is easier since there is no need to maintain multiple sizes and/or types like with tape, nor are there special environmental conditions required for adhesive storage.
In addition to production advantages, finished boxes have a better appearance and improved stability. Adhesive penetration into board stock provides a strong rigid bond so boxes maintain their shape regardless of temperature and humidity. Application of the adhesive on the inside of the box eliminates expensive graphics being hidden or damaged as can happen with tape.
