Mission

The Nordson Corporation Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life in our communities by improving educational outcomes that enable individuals to become self-sufficient, active participants in the community.

Values/Rationale

In the spirit of our corporate founders, the Nordson Corporation Foundation continues to operate on the belief that business, as a corporate citizen, has a social responsibility to share its success with the communities where it operates and draws employees.

The Foundation is dedicated to improving our communities by supporting the continuum of education from birth to adulthood in the belief that education is the key for individuals to become self-sufficient, productive members of society.

To prepare individuals for economic independence, a variety of quality educational experiences are necessary.  To be successful today, individuals not only need to master the basics, “reading, writing and arithmetic”, they must also know how to think critically and creatively.  Strengthening the community’s human capital – through quality education – is crucial.

The Foundation offers support to non-profit organizations that cultivate educational curriculum and experiences that foster self-sufficiency, job readiness and goals to aspire to higher education.  The Foundation is well aware of the fact that for non-profit organizations to remain viable they must receive operating support.  With this in mind, Nordson Corporation Foundation does invest in general operating support.

As stewards of the Foundation assets, the directors feel strongly that the organizations that are supported by the Foundation be able to measure the effectiveness of their mission and programs.  Quantitative and/or qualitative data allows for the Foundation to ensure that the organizations it supports are bringing about the desired outcomes in our communities.

Goals

The goals of the Nordson Corporation Foundation are to insure that:

  • All children have access to and receive quality educational experiences from early childhood
  • All individuals have the opportunity to be self-sufficient members of society
  • There is a continuum of quality educational opportunities
  • Our communities are strengthened by the organizations we fund whether their focus is education, human welfare, civic or arts and culture

Leaders in Nordson Philanthropy

Walter G. Nord believed that if a person made a good living, then it was their responsibility to give something back to those less fortunate and to the community where they reside.  His vision, and that of his wife, Virginia, created what has become The Nordson Corporation Foundation.

Eric Nord, along with his brother , institutionalized the Foundation by writing it into the charter of Nordson Corporation with a generous commitment of 5 percent of pretax domestic profit directed to the community.  The philanthropic spirit of Eric and his wife, Jane, has launched many community endeavors throughout Lorain County communities and Northeast Ohio.

Evan Nord and his wife, Cindy, exemplified philanthropy in action.  Their giving spirit ignited the creation and proliferation of such organizations as The Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization (O.H.I.O.), The Oberlin Early Childhood Center and Common Ground.  The Nordson Depot has been a free resource for the community for many years, thanks to Evan's creativity and commitment.

James (Jim) Doughman worked for many years as Nordson's representative in the community.  Affectionately called "Mr. Nordson," Jim was known for making people feel welcome and part of any activity in which he was involved.  He worked tirelessly to shepherd new nonprofits, like Cityview Neighborhood Center, and to strengthen the United Way organization in Lorain County.

Constance T. Haqq became the first executive director of The Nordson Corporation Foundation.  The creation of her position brought all of Nordson philanthropic activities under one umbrella.

William (Bill) P. Madar created the structure of the Foundation that exists today.  His vision enabled decision making to extend outside the director's realm to include Nordson employees in all domestic locations.  The Time 'n Talent employee volunteer program and the Partners in Education program were initiated under his leadership.  Bill's diligent service as a board member for many nonprofit organizations and his vision helped create The Center for Leadership in Education.

Edward P. Campbell is the current president of The Nordson Corporation Foundation.  As such, it will be under his guidance that the Foundation will position itself for the future.  Ed's commitment to good philanthropic stewardship will ensure that Nordson will be assisting worthwhile community projects for years to come.

Giving Strategies

The geographic areas in which Nordson has major facilities determine the Foundation's giving priorities.  These include Lorain county in Ohio; Greater Atlanta, Dawsonville and Swainsboro in Georgia; San Diego County, California; and East Providence, Rhode Island.  Additionally, the Foundation provided support to Monterey, California between 1994 and 2001.

Within these geographic areas, granting priorities are driven by community needs.  Although needs change quickly, our vision is long term.  We pursue and support results-oriented opportunities that prepare individuals for full and equal participation in the economic and social mainstream.  We believe these kinds of programs help improve the quality of life over the long term and produce stronger, more enlightened communities in which we live and work.  We strive to fulfill these responsibilities in our communities through contributions to charitable activities in four major giving categories: education, human welfare, civic affairs and arts and culture with a focus on education.
