The new EP 48 V bookbinding system from Nordson Corporation (Nasdaq – NDSN) provides controlled delivery of polyurethane (PUR) hot melt adhesives to book spines on traditional perfect binders. The complete system solution for quality bindings will be displayed at Graph Expo, booth 4150, Chicago, Illinois, September 24-27.

The closed system eliminates the extensive cleaning required with traditional wheel systems. Residual adhesive left in the wheel or drum melter is eliminated, reducing material waste. Specifically engineered for slot-to-spine PUR delivery, components include the EP 48 V slot gun, MC 4420 PUR melt unit, Eclipse™ EPC-30 pattern control, hoses and accessories.

The EP 48 V slot gun was developed in cooperation with Müller-Martini, Switzerland, to provide positive application pressure for better wetting, producing high pull values and improved lay-flat properties. Good cut-off and complete intermittent process control deliver exact, repeatable coatings. The gun provides adjustable coating widths from 1 to 60 millimeters and handles production speeds higher than 15,000 books per hour.

The tank-style melt unit accepts 18-kilogram foil bags or 5-gallon pails, eliminating the adhesive waste experienced with drum melters. An inert gas supply with vacuum pump and air dryer prevents premature adhesive curing, especially during changeovers. Continuous adhesive processing and temperature regulation to ±1º C help protect adhesive characteristics.
